Mariachi Music!!

A mariachi is defined as a small Mexican musical ensemble composed of a variety of mostly stringed instruments.

Mariachi is considered a uniquely Mexican sound, representing a homegrown tradition that embraces both indigenous and foreign elements.

The mariachi orchestra emerged in the late 1700s or early 1800s in West-central Mexico. The word mariachi may have came from the Coca Indians.

The instruments used in a mariachi include a vihuela (five stringed guitar), the guitarrón a fretless six string base guitar, a standard six string acoustic guitar, as well as violins and trumpets which usually play the melody.

Mariachi music is pretty unique with its vibrant melodies and lively rhythms. This makes this genre more than just a genre but also a cultural treasure.

These instruments all create very harmonious sounds.

Examples of some Mariachi music!!

Vicente Fernandez, "Por Tu Maldito Amor", 1989

Here is another example-

Antonio Aguilar, "El Aventurero" 1999

I personally love this music, it reminds me a lot of my grandpa who is from Mexico. He listened to Mariachi music all the time and although I never understood what it was, I always loved it because he would have so much fun and enjoy singing to my cousins and I.

  1. Hi Zoe!
I love the music that you decided to chose for this assignment. I think that mariachi bands bring so much fun and timeless feeling whenever you listen to one. It would be interesting to see if Mariachi bands have changed over the years and if they have changed when expanding to other countries.

  2. Hey there! I like the examples that you provided! It reminds me of eating in Mexican style food places and it makes me want to go right now... Did you know that Mariachi bands used to have to know lots of songs so they could play requested music? Here's a video that I liked...https://youtu.be/KfBANzsa5DM?feature=shared I think it's cool how one of the musicians instruments is his voice!

  3. Hi Zoe. I loved that you talked about mariachi, its such a fun band and it always makes me think about older movies. I know that often people think that mariachi is associated with happy times, but did you know that Mariachi bands are often present at end-of-life celebrations to provide emotional comfort and healing? I think that that's so cool.

  4. Hey! I love Mariachi bands! I like that you chose to write about them! They are so fun to listen to especially in person. I often notice that there is not really a lead singer in some bands. They all contribute in signing and playing their instrument. This is super unique.

  5. Although I rarely listen to mariachi music, I really enjoyed listening to the two examples you included in your post. I must agree with you, mariachi music is very unique and there aren’t a lot of genres that sound the same as it. I think if you love mariachi music you should try listening to “El son de la Negra” by Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan as it is a very enjoyable song as well.

  6. Hey Zoe,
Firstly, I have to say I love your topic choice! Mariachi is that type of music that you always tend to hear in movies or tv shows but rarely hear about it anywhere else. I personally never listened this kind of music before reading your blog, but I quite enjoyed it. I hope we can see more Mariachi pop up in media as the years come. Even though a lot of Mariachi has deep and emotional meanings, it's still quite fun to listen to. I also did some digging around and found some traditional stuff like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrVjKqXjjpM that I think you may like.
