 Evolution of Cell From Acoustic to Electric



The evolution of instruments has changed drastically in the past years compared to now. I personally always played the cello and have always loved the instrument. I remember learning about the electric cello for the first time a few years ago and was honestly pretty amazed. Therefore this is what I decided to write this blog about.


Though it has been debated many times, it is decided that the cello with the sound and size we know today was dated back to the 1600s. The cello can be dated back to Northern Italy. 


An Electric cello, is just like any electric version of an instrument like a guitar or violin. It can be hooked up to amplifiers to adjust the way it sounds and plays. I mostly found information on differences when having these instruments. Such as electric are not a fragile, you also don't have to worry about things like temperature that decide how the instrument will sound. When performing you can decide your own volume for dynamics and the feedback sound is not as strong when something is squeaking. It makes it much easier to adjust. 


Bach Cello Suite No. 1 in G performed by Mischa Maisky

This is a pretty generic Cello song that most everyone who knows orchestra or cellos will know. This is an absolutely beautiful song. It was written by Bach in 1824. This one uses beautiful dynamics and the person playing does a fantastic job. This strongly sounds like a generic string instrument and is what I think of when I think of a cello. 

"Nothing Else Matters" Metallica performed by Loop Trigger

This shows a beautiful performance by someone on the electric cello. This shows that he is hooked up to an amplifier and also has a way to loop this music due to what it is connected to. This shows that you can do cool things and change the music and sound around a lot more. I feel like majority of what I see for electric cello is usually some kind of rock or metal. It is loud and can make a sweet sound or a more of a hardcore rock sound. I love the electric cello as well as it creates an almost completely different kind of music.

    Hey there! I enjoy listening to the cello! I'm sure you've heard of "Cello Wars" by The Piano Guys... It's pretty popular. As soon as I saw what this post was about I thought of that video. I think that it switches between electric and acoustic cellos, it's neat to see the different appearances of the two different instruments. Like you said, you can hear the different dynamics that you probably wouldn't get by just using an acoustic cello.     The evolution of acoustic instruments to electronic instruments is a very fascinating topic. I would not have expected an instrument like the cello to have had an electric counter part of sorts. The song you chose by Loop Trigger is a great choice, the use of electronic loops in the song to make the cello the only instrument in the song was very cool. If you are looking for more songs like the one one by Loop Trigger I would recommend Thunderstruck by 2CELLOS, it is a great cover of the song.

    Hey Zoe! The pathway from acoustic to electric is always fun to delve into. I feel like I can feel your enthusiasm for this instrument through the screen, and it's quite refreshing to see someone so passionate about an instrument. I like how through your blog post, we can see the evolution of the cello from a traditional orchestra tool to now- where small productions from amateurs are made on the instrument daily.   Introduction Blog!!          Hi! My name is Zoe Payne. I am from Eagle River, Alaska. I love the outdoors as well as hunting and fishing. I work as a barista which is super fun to me! I also am in school right now to be an Elementary school teacher. I have two younger siblings who I am very close with!
